Building Types

House:
Single-family dwelling -- freestanding
 
Apartments:
Four or more single units in a common building
 
Duplex:
Two units either side-by-side or top-and-bottom
 
Townhouse:
A type of home that is usually constructed as a two or three story unit with a common wall or walls bordering the adjacent unit
 
Triplex:
Three units in a common building
 
Quadplex:
Four units in a common building
 
Condominium:
A complex of dwelling units in which each unit is individually owned rather than rented
 
Retirement Community:
For seniors usually 60 or older but varies in both age and type of housing. Can range from cottages and homes to shared rooms depending on the organization
 
Studio/Efficiency:
Typically one-room with an enclosed bathroom
 
Modular or Manufactured:
A type of housing in which major components are assembled in a factory and then shipped to the building site to be joined with other components to form the finished structure. Sometimes called "prefabricated" or "prefab" housing
 
Mobile Home:
A large house trailer that can be connected to utilities and can be parked in one place and used as permanent housing
 
Mobile Home Park:
A group of several mobile homes.
 
Shared Housing/Room to Rent:
People living in one home, sharing the living facilities such as the kitchen, living room and bathroom areas. This can be a good setting for those with disabilities.
 
Single Room Occupancy:
A multi-room and/or multi-floor facility that offers single rooms-for-lease. Typically a larger apartment-style building with shared kitchen facilities
 
Flat (apartment):
A floor, loft, or story in a building; especially, a floor of a house, which forms a complete residence in itself
 
Multi Family Flat:
A floor, loft, or story in a building; especially, a floor of a house, which forms a complete residence in itself
 
Loft:
A floor or room placed above another; a story. Especially, an upper story located in a building with a business below, often having no partitions
 
Group Home:
A home with six or fewer beds that house residents with chronic disabilities who can no longer live with their families. These homes usually have a trained care giver on staff 24 hours a day.
 
Assisted Living Facility:
Facilities which provide housing as well as assistance with daily living activities for seniors and people with disabilities. ALFs offer differing levels of monitoring, care and coordination of outside services to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
 
Short-Term Hotel/Motel/Inn:
A hotel suitable for short term rentals such as weeks or a month
 
Cooperative:
A cooperative is a member-owned corporation. A member of a cooperative does not directly own his dwelling unit, as in a condominium. Rather, the member has a membership certificate or stock in a corporation which owns the property. Membership in the cooperative carries with it the exclusive right to occupy a dwelling unit in the development and to participate in the operation of the cooperative corporation either as a member of the Board of Directors or as a voter in the same manner as a shareholder in any other corporation.
